Collaboratory

Friday 28 September , 12:00 pm – 5.00pm

The Lock-Up 90 Hunter St, Newcastle NSW 2300, Australia

Join Carlin McLellan, a practicing electronic music producer and composer, disability support worker and Registered Music Therapist for Collaboratory, for an interactive electronic music installation. McLellan’s practice considers the dynamic between therapist and client in sessions to be non-hierarchical – rather than a way to ‘heal’ people, it provide tools for self-empowerment and self-expression.

McLellan sees his role as a music therapist as someone who facilitates access to music making rather than someone who performs music. Come along and play with a variety of adapted musical instruments at your own pace. Instruments are set up to facilitate spontaneous, creative improvisation for anyone regardless of ability. Instruments in Collaboratory are programmed to create sounds which blend together harmoniously. For instance the ‘No-Wrong-Note-Keyboard’ is adapted so that no matter which key a participant presses it sounds in tune with the other music being produced in the installation. ‘Jam’ with a friend or play by yourself while adding texture to the overall soundscape.
