Dead Reckoning refers to a navigational technique in which a subject’s position is extrapolated in relation to a known previous position, and a set of known variables like speed, direction and time. For the group performance Dead Reckoning, Lawrence abstracts this idea into a ceremonial action of shared and personal recalibration. Drawing on kinship theory, memory work, and Barthes philosophies of the photograph as an intimation for Death, three performers work to expose and develop large photographic shrouds live. Dead Reckoning opens up a performative  site for collective magic-making, while splitting apart expected dynamics of portraiture. Set amongst natural cycles of tidal, lunar and solar flux, the performers move through a series of cycles themselves, each repetition an opportunity for small deaths and small births; support, surrender, control, and release.

Blake Lawrence is an experimental photographer and performance-maker from northern NSW. He has exhibited nationally at Firstdraft, Seventh Gallery, C3 Contemporary, The Walls, and Verge Gallery, and has presented performance work in Brisbane’s Spring Hill Reservoirs, and Sydney’s Carriageworks, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Art Gallery of NSW.

For Crack X 2018, Blake will be joined by regular collaborators Stelly G and Nicola Enrico Bruni.

Stelly G is a Sydney-based Fijian artist and performance maker, concerned with the decolonisation of the contemporary Pacific-diaspora experience. She presented her debut performance work SA YADRA MAI NA MARAMA LAILAI? in 2016 at St. O’Donnell’s Select Gallery #003. She has since performed at the Australian Museum, and the Sydney Opera House.

Nicola Enrico Bruni is a VCA trained dancer and cabaret performer. He performed at Carriageworks, with Justine Williams, for The National exhibition in 2017, and has toured nationally with Heaps Gay, performing at major touring festivals including Falls Festival, Groovin’ The Moo, and Secret Garden Festival.
